So earthly, so divine: the animal world in Villanovan culture

A new guided tour at the Archaeological Museum of Verucchio leads you to discover the deep and fascinating link between man and animal in the Villanovan culture, where reality and symbol are continuously intertwined.

Animal figures are not mere ornaments: they accompany everyday life, but also take on a powerful symbolic value in rituals and funerary contexts, becoming presences charged with meaning in the sphere of the sacred and in the delicate passage between the world of the living and that of the dead.

A nitrite still seems to echo, imprinted in time.
From a leg of an ancient wooden table emerges a predator with gaping jaws and sharp teeth; at its side a snake, whose sinuous body seems ready to move before our eyes.
Along the edges of a terracotta container parade fantastic animals: enigmatic presences, echoes of distant lands silently observing us. Aquatic birds plough the sky, perhaps guardians or ferrymen of souls to other dimensions...
